In July 2001, I transitioned from a confident businessmanto this in Petty France, Central LondonTime elapsed: just two hours or so.Pretty amazing just how quickly life can turn around, and it was only after later watching the Michael Douglas film called ‘Falling Down’ I realized what could happen in reality.Well, I never got to the gun stage but it was bizarre what happened.I had set out that afternoon from my house in the Midlands in England. I was going to check into a motel at the Motorway services at Heston, just a short hop from Heathrow airport, and then fly out the next day to LA for a two week business trip.I arrived at the motel parking lot at 2:30 PM, left my carry-on bag and my check-in bag in the trunk of the car, and went to the reception. It was all locked up and there was a note on the door: Check in will be available at 3:00 pm. So I went and had a coffee in the restaurant nearby.Returning to the car at 3:15 pm I opened the trunk to get my bags and discovered the carry-on bag was not in the trunk. Strange, so I searched the car and for sure the bag was not there, so I called home just to check if it was still there - no, it was not.Oh dear: I had a big problem, tickets, passport, credit cards gone, plus a few other things but not that vital, but no passport and tickets, so no flight the next day.Disaster! but I tried to keep calm.I went back to the motel reception and checked in and explained that somehow my passport and tickets and cards had been stolen so the receptionist called the police for me. Wow - zero interest; I was just given a crime number for my insurance. Now it was pre-911, but they suggested I call the Passport Office. It was of no interest to them if a terrorist used my passport and tickets to get on the plane and blow it up, as they were just concerned with local matters.Now at this point I had some sort of fantasy and conjured up a vision of somehow my passport being returned at Heathrow the next day from the ‘terrorist’ who had stolen my passport whilst trying to board my flight with a bomb.I would be hailed as a hero and upgraded to first class, so all I had to do was get on the phone to the passport office and speak to the top guy and bingo, James Bond or some equivalent would be on the case.I called the passport office in Petty France Central London and eventually got through to some bored lady in the ‘lost passport department’.“Lost passport, well if you can get here by 4:30 PM we might be able to help. After that we open at 8:00 AM tomorrow”.I glanced at my watch - it was 3:40 PM so asked the receptionist to call a cab to get me to central London.Thinking I would get this and the ‘Knowledge ’.No. I got thisand a Croatian driver who had just started work that day, and it was his first job ever in London.As I was in a hurry I did not notice at first what kind of heap I was getting into so just told the driver the address and promised him double the fare if he got me there in half an hour…He looked somewhat confused then stuffed a rather worn London A to Z street map into my hands and said excitedly, “Like movie, No? You be map, I drive like crazy, let’s go man”.Oh no, off we screeched, the first bit was fine as it was the motorway but then when we got onto the streets he was unstoppable, “I taxi, I go in bus lane, I show you how we drive in Croatia, you see, London no problem, driver is pussy here”.Now I just concentrated on guiding him and we somehow were outside the Passport Office in Petty France within 30 minutes and I was still alive.The driver was really pleased with himself , “You see mister, Croatia is number one, I get you here now you give me one hundred pounds please”.He was pointing to a notice on the dashboard, ‘standard fare, Heathrow to Central London £50, so I was going to have to pay double. Oh shit! All I had was £5 cash and some $ travelers checks. All of my cards and any other means of payment had gone with my carry-on bag.Cunning plan though as I was in a rush. “ Look I need a ride back so can you wait?” He had a think, “ Ah, OK like in movies you like James Bond, no, you kill man here and we go quick, it is no problem, just like home, I wait and then we go very fast”.Right. So I entered the passport office, determined to get some action going and sort out my situation. I had 15 minutes maximum so scanned the waiting area and the windows where one gets service. Now I thought I was in luck as there was a window for ‘Lost, stolen and missing passports’ so went on over - no queue so was sure I would get some help.I patiently explained my predicament, and my concern that I was the victim of a terrorist plot to blow up a trans-Atlantic airliner, and they must mobilize all forces to trap the terrorist at the airport tomorrow and get my passport back.The woman glanced at her watch and looked totally disinterested. She pushed a large form over to me and said, “Please fill it in and we will see what we can do. You have 5 minutes. If you cannot fill it in now and supply all of the documents required, you will need to come back in the morning with everything needed.”I looked at the list, Original Birth certificate, Signed reference from a professional person, photos and so on, so no chance: it was at least a week's work.I was starting to panic a little now, “ But what about the terrorist who is going to blow up the plane tomorrow? Can you not get people at the airport to intercept him and get my passport back? I know the flight number and everything.”.By this time the office had about three minutes to close and a Somali lady had come up behind me and was waiting patiently. So the passport lady just said, “ Sir please go and fill in the form as you are holding up the queue; there are no terrorists and if you do not get out of the line I will get security to come and remove you from the building”.That was it then — my trip trashed, my only hope of foiling a terrorist attack ridiculed and I now had the prospect of just going back to the motel and then going home defeated.The taxi was still waiting outside - I suppose that was a bonus. Slight problem though, how to pay him…As we drove down the street I spotted a Bureau de Change with a teller window out onto the street, so asked the driver to pull up.I went over to the window pulled out some USD dollar Amex travelers’ checks, signed them and passed them over. They were for $300.The lady teller had a look and asked for my passport or some other ID, which of course I did not have as it had been stolen.She just passed them back and said , “No ID Sir, no money”.That was it - I was totally defeated, yet again , crushed and no way to go, I had trashed my business trip, failed to foil a terrorist attack and was now at the mercy of a Croatian taxi driver who needed payment.I pushed the checks back and tried reason but to no avail, then I asked to speak to her supervisor. An older lady appeared and I tried again but the same answer.So it was time to beg big time, I got down on my knees and with eyes brimming with tears begged that they could please give me some money.Eventually after a few minutes it worked and the cash was handed over and then I was back in the taxi.The driver was a bit confused, “We go fast again and double money”.“No just normal please” I told him, I still had to read the map though.Arriving back at the hotel I paid him his £150 and he was really pleased and told me next time I wanted to “Make the hit in London like Jameses Bond spy , I am driver for sure”.I entered the motel and set off for my room, totally defeated, life was a shit and I was a complete waste of space.Halfway along the corridor my mobile rang.“Are you Mr. Morgan”Me: “yes”“Did you lose a black bag with tickets and passport in it”.Me: “yes”Just then of course my mobile started to bleep with the low battery signal.I just screamed down the phone “Look give me your address now I am on my way”The lady at the other end seemed a bit put out but gave me the address which I wrote on the corridor wall as I had no paper to hand.OK back to reception and asked for a taxi to try and get the bag back.Well guess who turned up?“ We go and make hit now, you is like Jameses Bond, you spy, I tell my family back home I am driver for crazy killer man”Anyway I still had to read the A to Z map for him, just like ‘James Bond’.We arrived at a run-down housing project on the outskirts of South London, and when I rang the bell on the entry phone a nice lady came out and handed the carry-on bag to me, saying she had found it in the bushes at the front of her apartment block, had seen my filofax with my contact details in it and called me.She refused any offer of money and just wished me well on my trip and that was it.When I got back to the hotel I paid off the driver and he winked at me, “You have lady boss like James Bond, Lady M, I remember him from film”.Incredibly nearly everything in the bag was intact, passport tickets, credit cards, work documents, just a US-compatible mobile phone and a small bag of USD in cash had gone.Of course the next day at the airport having a ‘stolen passport’ was going to be a problem.No, nothing happened and that first gin and tonic on the plane was like ambrosia of the Gods.I had a lot of questions as to what had happened and found out a while later what had occurred to that small black bag and remembered that was not the first time in my possession it had returned like a boomerang after being lost in mysterious circumstances.The kind lady was sent a bouquet of flowers and a thank you letter.My begging career on the streets of London was very short but a great lesson in how things can go wrong when you are cruising along in life.

I answered a similar query earlier in these columns. Please go through it for more clarity. It's not a different state or district, but from the address where you stay and reside at the time of applying for PP is what matters. Briefly, you have to apply for your PP from the address wherever you stay presently. If your stay there is less than a year, you have to attach the proof of your previous address where you've stayed continuously for a year.

My friend and I were travelling around Japan. We spoke close to no Japanese except perhaps sumimasen and arigato. On one particular night we had stayed out quite late and decided to take a short cut back to where we were staying. It was raining and all the restaurants were closed near our Hotel. My friend was agitated and just wanted to go back to the hotel, but i was hungry and had seen a little restaurant sign on the side road we'd walked down. I convinced her to go back. I should say my friend isn't very adventurous with food, so we'd been eating mostly ramen in very touristy areas for the last week or so.Walking into the restaurant was one of the most intimidating things I did the whole time I was there. The place had absolutely zero foreigners in there and it was TINY! It probably would have fit 10 maybe 15 people max sitting around a bar that circled a grill. So all eyes are on these two wet Australian girls that walked in. Initially we froze, but the chef waved for us to sit down. The menu was all in Japanese. Everyone still looking at us. I'm feeling so awkward and thinking i'd made a mistake coming here when the man next to us turns and asks in English if we wanted help ordering. Bless him, he helped us order our food with a big smile. And then when my friend tried to ordered us two beers in japanese everyone laughed and clapped with the kindest faces. After that everyone was so friendly to us. The chef took a liking to us and laughed so hard every time we tried to ordered another beer in japanese. The food was amazing and we had such an good experience there.When we got up to leave one of the waiters/chef working there called out loudly to us as we were walking out, I was worried we'd forgotten to pay something but he was running towards us with umbrellas! He wanted to make sure we didn't get wet walking home. We tried to refuse but he pushed them on us, smiling from ear to ear. It was the nicest experience I had in Japan and I'm so glad we braved it and went back to that restaurant. I never expected it would turn out like that.

Same case bro, I also applied for tatkal passport which clearly says POST verification, even than it come for police verification (after 10 days of appointment). And guess what after that verification its been 3 weeks now and yet my status shows under process at RPO. When I ask police they say. They have send the verification report. U will shortly receive your pp through post.When I call RPO, well they never answer my phone!! I have dropped a mail ,filed a grievance and tweet to @CPVindia also.. But its all quiet. My first travel from company to site is been sacrificed beacause of this. The whole experience was very disappointing. P.S : More than 1 month now and no news of pp. Also the corrupt police persons asked for money also, which I have to give since I need it urgently that time.
